Destroying LA for “2012″
Description:
This talk presents the tools and methodology used to create Los Angeles destruction effects in “2012″.
Feathers for Mystical Creatures: Creating Pegasus for Clash of the Titans
Description:
This talk summarizes development of the sophisticated and reliable feather system used in “Clash of The Titans” to create several photo-realistic flying characters in over 100 shots at a multitude of levels of detail.
Furtility: Dynamic grooming for Wolfman
Description:
Delivering shots of werewolf transformations on “Wolfman” required significant new development for The Moving Picture Company’s fur system, from the guide-curve editor to the 3D texture engine and workflows for blending between different groomed hairstyles.
I Love It When A Cloud Comes Together
Description:
For the “The A-Team”, Rhythm & Hues modeled, animated, and rendered an extensive storm-cloud system at high resolution (centimeters) over a range of many kilometers, using newly developed volumetric tools.
Highly Detailed Fluid Simulations on the GPU
Description:
This talk describes an SPH-based fluid-simulation toolkit running on the GPU, the powerful integration with Houdini that greatly benefits the production, and how the increase in simulation speed changes the way artists work with fluids.
NextLimit Realflow
RealFlow is a unique fluids and body dynamics software package which allows you to simulate anything from a single drop of water to a massive tsunami crashing across a beach, sweeping debris in its wake. RealFlow remains the definitive tool for the creation of flawlessly realistic simulations, and has been used to create some of the most ground-breaking visual effects ever seen, in movies like “Avatar”, “District 9”, “2012”, “GI Joe”, and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, as well as countless commercials, TV programs, and game cinematics.
ExoticMatter NAIAD
Naiad provides a really high degree of creative control while preserving realistic fluid motion, this comes from the software which introduces both a new GUI design and a new fluid solver. The program is not a renderer but it produces extremely realistic water and fluid simulations with a nodal-based user interface. While the product can be driven via either an API or bypassing the GUI and using the command line solver, the new interface presents a whole new way of designing complex fluid simulations.
SideFX Houdini
Houdini is a high-end 3D animation package developed by Side Effects Software which headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Its chief distinction from other packages is that it has been designed as a purely procedural environment. FLIP, SPH, Volume fluids, Cloth, RBD, Smoke, Fire, Clouds…..
- Dynamics – Rigid Body Dynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wire (Curve) Dynamics, Cloth Simulation
- Volumetrics – generations/population/manipulation/rendering of scalar- and vectorfields
ILM Stanford PhysBAM
PhysBAM is a multiphysics simulation library, capable of simulating rigid & deformable bodies, compressible & incompressible fluids, coupled solids & fluids, coupled rigid & deformable solids, articulated rigid bodies & humans, fracture, fire, smoke, hair, cloth, muscles, as well as many other natural phenomena.
ScanLine Flowline
Flowline is Scanline’s Inhouse Software designed to handle all types of effects. It is a new approach to Hydro Fluid Simulation and Rendering for Fire,
Water, Ocean, Smoke, Clouds and other effects. Designed as an internal production tool, Flowline evolved to meet internal production challenges. Now, after 5 years and more than a milion lines of code, Flowline has become a full robust system for fluid related effects.
Aquqrius
Aquarius is an original application designed to create smooth and realistic fluid water animations. Compared to existing particle-based fluid simulators which cause artificial bounce, Aquarius produces high quality visual effects of fluid movements without visual loss of volume. In addition, unlike Blob, it does not generate unnatural splash or roundness in the liquid surface. Aquarius can create high quality effects through control of various characteristics such as liquid flow, splash, bubble, vortex, viscosity, collision, and external forces

FXGear FLUX
FXGear has been building a fluid simulation framework called ‘FluX’, which can create various fluidic effects such as explosions, flames, smoke, and water. FluX simulates and renders such effects over a distributed system using its own parallel computation features. Currently, we are developing key technologies such as hybrid simulation of grid particles to create various fluid effects for the large- scale natural phenomena in a parallel simulation environment.

Good articles about fluid simulation in big feature movies digged from net

3Dworld source
Five of the industry’s leading fluid experts provide a selection of tips designed to help avoid that sinking feeling when simulating (and faking) fluid-filled scenes.
Movie effects and natural phenomena have always been awkward bedfellows. The real- world behaviour of fluids is almost impossibly complex, with a huge number of variables all affecting how liquids and gases move, transform, intermingle and disperse.
Then there’s the challenge of bringing such amorphous volumes to the screen. Rendering fluids, with their ever- changing densities, opacities, degrees of reflection and levels of refractivity, is something that requires many calculations to accurately trace and render. Little wonder the visual effects industry avoided CG water for so long.

New, ETI chocolate bars commercial created by DOteam!
Our team was hired to work directly in ‘Ghost behind’ studio in Milan directed by Max Rocchetti. Our job was to create flying streams of chocolate, streams morphing into horses, horses morphing back into streams and final chocolate explosion in quite short period of one month. ‘Ghost behind’ company is Maya based studio so we had to quickly blend in into their pipeline.
